Dr. Marjorie Altergott Memorial Library for Justice and Equity

Marjorie Altergott and Aerial Dance Chicago

Marjorie Altergott (mother of ADC founder Chloe Jensen) was an avid supporter and volunteer for Aerial Dance Chicago for over 20 years. Her working contributions helped shape what the company is today. Through the years she served on the advisory board of directors, assisted with data analysis, helped develop staff infrastructure, led key strategic planning sessions and assisted with grant proposals.

Up until her death, Marjorie attended every production in the history of ADC. When an event had multiple showtimes she didn’t come to just one, she came to all of them.

About Marjorie’s life and life’s work

As a young woman Marjorie volunteered as a nurse for the Black Panther Party and worked the night shift at Cook County Hospital. Throughout her life, she was actively involved in organizing and protesting against racism, sexism and violence. While her kids were young, she went back to school to get her masters degree and taught Sociology and Women’s Health at DePaul University and Northeastern Illinois University.

Marjorie raised five kids while returning to school to get her PhD in public health. She then put her brilliant talents to work on grant writing, statistical analysis, public health research and intensely laborious projects for PCC Community Health Center, advocating for health care rights of Chicagoans in need.

About the library

This small library is intended to honor Marjorie’s life’s work and her contributions to Aerial Dance Chicago, but also to serve as a continuation of her efforts, as we all need to be "all in" as we work for equity in our society. We hope the sharing of Marjorie’s resources will help us all become more aware, educated human beings.
