Libby Westra grew up dancing ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance in Appleton, WI at Fox Cities Dance Academy and Makaroff School of Ballet. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in Dance and pre-Physical Therapy. While there, she performed in multiple shows and toured with the university dance group Dancers in Company. She began experimenting with choreography and created pieces that were selected to be performed in undergraduate shows. She also spent a year in San Francisco dancing with the Alonzo King LINES Ballet Training Program. There, she was chosen to choreograph a solo that was presented at the Spring Student Showcase. Afterwards, she moved to Chicago and began dancing as an apprentice with Inaside Chicago Dance. She continued to choreograph for local dance studios and for a charity event called Freespace. She found her way to Aerial Dance Chicago and was immediately inspired by the possibilities of aerial dance. She has been dancing with the company for two seasons and is excited to join the teaching team. She also teaches dance in the suburbs, and helps out at a physical therapy clinic. Dance, and aerial work has truly made a difference in her life and she hopes her students will also be inspired and challenged by the beauty and strength of aerial dance.
